Buying property in Greece

How a purchase works, from search to registration

Your lawyer should be of your own choice and trust, independent of the agent and the seller. Here is the process in brief.

  1. 1Find the property yourself or through one or more agents. Agent commission is up to 2% of the price.
  2. 2Retain your own lawyer, who works only for you.
  3. 3Your lawyer checks the titles at the local Land Registry or Cadastre for liens and other burdens.
  4. 4The notary, chosen by the buyer, drafts the deed of sale, signed in person or by proxy.
  5. 5The deed is registered in your name at the Land Registry. Only then is the purchase complete.
